For just over six months I’ve kept this blog, where I write occasionally on community advancement, opportunities to give back, and some of my personal thoughts on the best and most impactful ways to get involved around your community.

But what about my community?

I’m from the Pittsburgh area, meaning much of my focus on community centers around neighborhoods and areas around western PA. Donations, whether they’re time or money, feel more impactful when they’re going to those around you – the impacts feel more concrete when you can see the changes they invite in your community.

So what charities and nonprofits around the Pittsburgh area are worth your attention and a second look once you’re in a position to get involved? Check out some suggestions below.

The Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh

With a sparking 96.53 rating from Charity Navigator, the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh  is one of the Pittsburgh area’s highest rated charities that serves to strengthen the community ties and enhance the lives of Jewish people both in Pittsburgh and beyond.

The Ruffed Grouse Society

More of an animal person? The Ruffed Grouse Society has you covered. Featuring (once again) a fantastic score on its Charity Navigator page. The society helps to develop critical habitats for the bird around our area.

Global Links

A medical relief organization based in Pittsburgh, Global Links has provided and raised over $186 million in funding to over 100 countries around the world.

SLB Radio Productions

Not a global nonprofit, but one that directly benefits those in the Pittsburgh community, SLB’s mission is perhaps best put by them on their website, “SLB Radio Productions, Inc. uses radio and audio to amplify voices of youth—and members of other communities whose stories are often marginalized—to educate, empower, and build community. Our work is based on the principle that all people have the capacity and right to develop their authentic voice and know that their voice matters—that they matter—and that their voice can be used for self-expression, inquiry, and change.

A noteworthy cause without question, and one that certainly becomes more important as the disadvantages of those around us are further brought to the forefront in today’s climate.

Regardless of where you chose to donate your money or time in the area, do your research and know good from bad, and questionable from sure-bets.
